If you’ve listened to any episodes of my Stacking Knowledge podcast, you probably noticed that they’re quite raw as I intentionally do very little editing of each episode. More specifically, I do as much editing as possible before I record the show.
In a recent episode of the “How To Take Over the World” podcast, they had “Founders” host David Senra on the show. David explained the idea of pre-editing like this:
“This is an idea I got from Walt Disney and don’t even know if it was conscious but he talked about it was so expensive to edit back then that you had to do the edit before you did the drawing. And I was like that’s a really good idea, I still edit after I record too but most of the edit happens before I record.”
Back in the early days of Disney, recording and editing of movies was wildly expensive, so the closer they could be to the final product on the first draft, the better.
If you have a podcast or show that requires heavy editing, that’s not a bad thing — some of the best do it that way. For me, I like David’s approach of doing more work up front and then just rolling with it when I’m finished.
