If you’re a web agency or freelancer, you’ve probably looked into the various Partner Programs offered by Google. They’re a great way to learn more about their products, as well as showcase that knowledge to your potential clients.
While Google has a variety of programs for things such as Google Ads, Analytics, Apps, and others, they don’t have one focused on SEO. If an agency tells you that they’re “Google SEO Certified” or anything like, they’re making it up.
There was an interesting discussion on Twitter recently, where it was pointed out that an agency was promoting themselves as a “Google-partner SEO agency”. A user suggested that the wording was “very border line”. Google’s John Mueller felt it deserved a stronger rebuke by saying “It’s not really borderline, it’s completely wrong”.
If you have the time and energy to become a proper Google Partner, we strongly encourage it. If you’re thinking about working with someone that is already a partner, it’s worth checking to make sure they’re telling the truth — and that their type of partnership even exists at all!
