When it comes to handling mobile users, you have a few ways you can set up your site. A mobile responsive site is often the best way to go, but you can also set up a separate mobile site. Whatever you do, choose one direction and stick with it.

If you have a website these days, odds are that it’s mobile responsive — and that’s great! It means that your one site will flex and adjust and rearrange items to fit any kind of device that pulls it up, from a big cinema display, to a tablet, to a phone. It works well.
In some cases, though, it might make sense to create a separate mobile site and direct those users there. That’s fine too. However, trying to do both of those things can confuse Google and is a bad idea.
A user recently asked Google’s John Mueller about this on Twitter, as the user had a mobile responsive site but also a separate mobile site that they used in some situations. After some back and forth, which you can find from the link in our show notes, John summarized by stating the following:
“We’d probably get confused – which one should we show when? It’s unclear. I’d strongly recommend using a single-URL setup (responsive or dynamic serving).”
For most of you, this won’t matter much. You have a mobile responsive site, and only a mobile responsive site, and you’re in good shape. However, if you’re working with a client that used to have a separate mobile site, and you’re suggesting a responsive site instead, be sure you get on the same page and choose a single path forward. Trying to play the best of both sites means that you’ll probably miss on both of them.
