Spend your time wisely, but pick up the napkins

As your business grows, a big key to success is for you to “get out of the weeds” and focus on the growth of the company. While that’s certainly true, and it’s something I’m working on a lot, it’s important to be willing to do anything you can to help.

Dan Cathy, the President of Chick-Fil-A, will often spend time in the parking lot picking up trash of restaurants that he visits. He’s even been known to take a minute to clean up the restrooms of his competition.

Most of us have worked for companies that have leaders that are out of touch with the people that work for them. Dan Cathy doesn’t need to spend his days devoted to cleaning restaurants, but his willingness to pitch in and help out gains immeasurable respect from those at every level of the company.

Hire people to do the work, focus on the big picture at your company, but never been afraid to roll up your sleeves and dig in.
