Taylor Constructions likes to randomly bug people

August 19, 2008 by mickmel Leave a Comment

Reading Time: 2 minutes

A few years ago, a number kept calling our house while we were out, but didn’t leave a message.  Finally we were around one time when they called, and it was Taylor Construction looking to drum up some business.  I told them very clearly that even if we needed construction services, they were now off our list.  I don’t deal with companies that cold call.

Today they went further — a home visit!  There’s nothing I like more than people trying to sell me stuff, unsolicited, while we’re getting the girls ready for bed.  Just so it’s clear, they’re still off the list…

So what’s a company to do?  It’s simple — be able to be found.  If I want to hire a company to do some construction work at the house, make sure you’re the first company I find.  In my case, that would mean Google.  Let’s say we wanted to get new windows for the house.  I’d probably start by searching for something like “marietta window replacement”.  They’re not in the first 100 results.

Looking at their site (no, I’m not linking to it), it seems they are targeting the word “Atlanta” instead of any suburb, which kind of makes sense.  Ok, so let’s try “atlanta window replacement”.  No dice — still not in the top 100.

The problems with their site are fairly basic things.  Maybe if they read my SEO blog rather than cold calling and door-to-door soliciting, they’d be in better shape in Google…

Yes, the Nibblers ARE as good as advertised

August 18, 2008 by mickmel Leave a Comment

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Zaxby’s has been really trying to pimp out their “nibblers”, little chicken strip sandwiches.  It’s not a bad deal — three nibblers, fries and a drink for a little under $6.

Here’s the thing.  They’re good.  Really good.  I’ve never been a fan of Zax sauce, but it really works with these.

The downside is that they’re about a zillion calories.  I haven’t seen specific nutritional information for them, but I’m guessing the meal is in the 1200-1500 calorie range with probably 75 fat grams.  Ouch!  Still, they’re good for a treat every now and then…

Goodyear’s biggest enemy is itself

August 18, 2008 by mickmel Leave a Comment

Reading Time: < 1 minute

On an old blog of mine, I expressed frustration about Goodyear competing against itself.  In that case, it was radio ads that essentially said “every Goodyear sucks except for ours“.

To be honest, we’ve been pleased with Goodyear.  There are two locations near us, both of which do pretty good work.  The problem is that they compete against each other too much.  The image to the right shows two postcards, one from each location, that we received today.

In the past, the pricing has been even more varied.  You would think for something like this they’d at least have their prices be the same, but I guess not.  This just seems silly to me.

AdSense for Feeds now open to all!

August 15, 2008 by mickmel Leave a Comment

Reading Time: < 1 minute

It’s been a few months since they first announced it, but AdSense for Feeds is now available to all AdSense/FeedBurner users.

You should notice a new entry on your main AdSense page for “AdSense for Feeds”.  To get started, you need to ask Google to manually tie your AdSense and FeedBurner accounts together.  To do that, send an e-mail to [email protected] and give them your Feedburner account name and the Google Account e-mail address that you use to sign into AdSense.  I was bummed when I heard that it was a manual process, but they turned mine around in about 45 minutes.  I’ve just added the ads to a few feeds of mine, so we’ll see how it goes.

The Google Operating System blog has more details (and screenshots) on how to get started.

I’ll post back with my results in a few days.

Need help getting more traffic to your blog?

August 6, 2008 by mickmel Leave a Comment

Reading Time: 2 minutes

I apologize for not posting very much lately.  I’ve been working with a handful of bloggers to try to get their traffic (and revenue) beefed up, and I’ve not had much time for this site lately.  The techniques I’m using are really working quite well, and now I’m opening it up to other people.  I don’t want to try to assist too many people (it takes a personal relationship with each blog), but if you’d like some help with your blog, let me know.  Here’s the simple version of how it works:

  1. I manage your blog (WordPress updates, plugins, SEO tweaks, ad placement, etc).
  2. You continue to write your blog posts.
  3. I get a 25% split of your ad impressions.
buy prograf online wp-content/uploads/2016/06/prograf.html

To help explain this idea to potential clients, I’ve set up a simple site outlining how it works.  The first question that most people have is: “Wait.  I’m trying to earn more revenue, and I’m not sure I want to give up 25% of my revenue.”  It’s a fair question.  However, my clients (so far) have all been very pleased, as they’ve started earning much more than the 25% that I get.  Here are some stats froma recent client I’ve started helping.

Those are genuine stats from Google Analytics, snipped just a few minutes ago.  Each dot represents one week, leading up to last week.

The beauty of the revenue-sharing is this — you pay nothing.  Nada. $0.00.  Also, because I’m getting a small portion of the ad revenue, you can rest assured that I will work hard to get your blog running as smoothly as possible.

If you’re already WordPress-savvy and doing well, then you certainly don’t need my help.  However, if you’re having problems keeping your site running well, or if traffic just isn’t increasing as quickly as you think it show, shoot me an e-mail and we can chat.

Google makes it clear — you can show ads from multiple AdSense accounts on a single page

July 30, 2008 by mickmel Leave a Comment

Reading Time: < 1 minute

There have been arguments about this for months, but Google has finally made it clear — you are allowed to show ads from more than one AdSense account on a single page.

For revenue-sharing sites, it makes configuration much easier.  Instead of having to make sure all of the ads on a page are from the same account, you can mix-and-match however you want.  This has been the case since the last TOS revision back in February, but there has been a lot of confusion.  Google simply wanted to make it clear.

AdSense ads finally coming to FeedBurner

I’ve been waiting for this for a while, but FeedBurner publishers will soon be able to insert AdSense ads in their feeds

.  I’d love to insert some insightful commentary here, but there’s not much else to say.  If you don’t know what AdSense or FeedBurner are, then I don’t know why you’re on an SEO blog. 🙂

It’ll be interesting to see how well it works.  I have a couple of very large feeds (not this site – ha!), so I’m anxious to give it a shot.  They’ll be rolling it out to a small group of publishers next week, and the rest of us “soon”.  Once I’m able to try it, I’ll be sure to post my findings.

I love the Target parking deck

May 24, 2008 by mickmel Leave a Comment

Reading Time: < 1 minute

We got a brand new Target store near us not too long ago.  It’s very nice.  I’ve been there maybe 4 times, and Kelly has been there a good bit more often.  However, neither of us have parked in the underground deck before.

Yesterday we were out when a pretty hard thunderstorm began rolling through.  We were heading to Target anyhow, so it worked out great.  We parked underground, got what we wanted, and got out.

Here’s the kicker: they built the deck simply to provide enough parking for the area.  The bonus is that it is directly contributing to the sales at the store.  Given the weather, we certainly would have simply gone home if the underground parking wasn’t available.  Instead, we went, we shopped, we spent some money.

It’s really pretty nice, too.  Very white and clean.  I’m sure part of that is simply because it’s so new, so we’ll see what it looks like in a couple years.

Bad stuff from the China House in Marietta

May 19, 2008 by mickmel Leave a Comment

Reading Time: < 1 minute

We had a fun time getting dinner tonight.  We ordered a couple of meals from “China House” (about 2 miles away from our house) at around 6:00.  We were told “under 45 minutes”.  45 minutes would have been kind of late for us, but we figured it’d be alright.  At 6:50, we gave them a call to see where the food was.

“The driver is on the way to your house, but rush hour traffic is bad.”  What?  Less than one mile up East Piedmont Road is “rush hour”.  C’mon!

Still, we waited.  At about 7:05 we called again, this time to cancel.  He assured us that the driver was almost there, but we canceled anyhow.  No apologies, nothing.  Quite a bit of silence on their end, which was quite odd.

Even more interesting was at about 7:20 (after Kel had already made some pancakes for dinner – score!), the driver called to make sure he had the right address.  Ha!  He seemed quite put off that we had canceled the order a while ago.

Needless to say, we won’t be calling them again anytime soon.

The daily pace of AdSense

May 8, 2008 by mickmel Leave a Comment

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The last few days aside, AdSense tends to keep a pretty consistent pace for me each day. Over the last month, I’ve tried to keep track of my earnings every 30 minutes throughout the day so I could chart them. On 10 different days I was able to get at least 10 different numbers to plot.  Most days started at 6am and ended around midnight.  The missing data was simply interpolated from the surrounding data and the zero hour of 3AM EST (midnight PST).

I figured having this chart would help to me to get a better idea of how the current day is doing, rather than just saying “it feels high” or “it seems low”. The few gems I’ve been able to pull out of it:

  • When I get up at 6am, AdSense is between 5-10% of my daily total.
  • The halfway point of my day is between 1:15pm and 3:00pm, with the average being right around 2:00.
  • When I go to bed (usually around midnight), we’re just over 90% of the daily total.

I’m making a big effort to check the stats less often now, but I thought it’d be fun to generate a chart like that. I hope you find it useful!
