The Sunday Summary: Loud websites, boring marketing, and good communication

Here’s a bit about what I wrote, read and learned over the past week. I hope you find it helpful!

Blog posts from the past week

  • If no one is against your positioning, does it even matter? A solid positioning statement is the core to successful marketing. You need to know what you stand for, but also what you stand against. Too many companies simply list generic platitudes, which isn’t particularly helpful.
  • The internet is loud; your website shouldn’t be. The web is being filled with over-optimized websites that have over-optimized funnels, and humanity is seemingly disappearing. That’s unlikely to reverse course anytime soon, but you can. If you can offer some clarity and restraint, that actually can signal confidence to those that find you.
  • Good marketing is boring, and that’s a compliment. When people think of “great marketing”, they think of huge campaigns, celebrity influencers, and Super Bowl ads. Those can be great, but they’re out of reach for most people. Rather than press toward that unreachable level, lean into the opposite. Push for reliability over novelty, systems over stunts, and trust over tactics.
  • Issues versus Tensions. Issues can be solved. Tensions can only be eased.
  • The myth of the finished website. A periodic website refresh is crucial, but we’ve all seen a ton of website that got a huge, beautiful overhaul and then… just sat there. What happens between website redesigns is what really matters.
  • Good communication is more than just words. When we think about “communication”, we tend to think about words. Rightfully so, as words are a huge part of communication, but the pace of your speech, body language, eye contact, and much more can make a big impact.

Books that I’m reading

I read for a total of 1:40 last week with the following:

Tech Rec

Stealing the idea from my friends at the Tech Talk Y’all podcast, I’ll drop in some tech recommendation every week as well.

  • Microsoft OneNote. I’m trying to find a good solution for handwritten notes that is truly cross-platform, and I may end up with OneNote. It works on every platform, and is pretty solid. I’m not sold yet, but it’s a solid tool to consider for this kind of solution.

I hope you found some value in this. If you ever have questions, ideas, or disagreements regarding anything I write, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
