A few years ago I was car shopping and was looking at perhaps getting a Nissan as my next car. As I researched further, though, I found out that they didn’t yet support Android Auto (which was on the list of features I was looking for).
When I Googled for “why doesn’t Nissan support Android Auto“, the #1 result was from… Nissan! They had crafted a nice page explaining their process and how they planned to support it soon (which they indeed did). Rather than shy away from being one of the last to support it, they published their thoughts so that they could own the narrative.
We do the same with our clients at GreenMellen. With many of our clients, we work hard to get them increasing levels of traffic to their site. It generally works quite well, but sometimes traffic dips a bit and it’s tempting to want to hide. For example, here is Google traffic to a client of ours, and it hit a pretty good dip in April of this year:
While I hated to see that dip, we dug into the reasons behind it and quickly righted the ship. In their case, it was really an unexpected bump in March, and then April resumed the previous slow climb upward. Not a bad thing at all, but it was worth our time to dig into the details and take whatever action might be necessary.
Nissan could have hidden from the fact that they were very late with Android Auto support, but by embracing the shortcoming they were able to tell their own story while they worked to make things right. Stay truthful and you’ll almost always come out better on the other side.
